Yosef Yitzchak the son of  Rabbi Sholom DovBer,  was destined to become the 6th Rebbe, born in Lubavitch in 1880. When he was just 15 years old, be began to assist his father in communal affairs and in attending Rabbinical conferences in Kovno in 1895 and a year later in Vilna Lithuania. He also arranged to open a textile factory in Dubrovna, which created jobs for two thousand Jews.

Yosef Yitzchak was known to be fearless, which he became famous for, and he was arrested on numerous occassions for standing up to authorities. His father had to send him to Petersburg, ruled by the Czar, when all his lobbying efforts failed, and with no option left, he secretly went into a government building, and made his way into the minister private office, there he found some documents, took out the minister's personal stamp and stamped  " Rejected " on the paper and placed it in de out box.

When Germany invaded Russia in WW1, Rabbi Sholom DovBer fled Lubavitch and went six hundred miles south to Moskow, there he re- established a spiritual center for the Chabad movement.

Rabbi Sholom DovBer the 5th Rebbe, passed away in 1920, leaving the community bereft and facing the assults from the forces of Communism. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn became Rebbe, he was known by Chassidim as the Frierdiker Rebbe. Under communism, authorities declared Yeshivas and Chadorim illegal, they also banned Jewish publishing, the last religious book was a commentary on Maimonides in 1926 and the last Jewish calendar was printed in 1928.

But the greatest obstacle for Chassidim was the new Rebbe, in the summer of 1920 just after his father's passing, communist agents with guns drawn, ordered the Rebbe to stop all activities. But unafraid as the Rebbe was, he faced his tormentors and told them " Many a man with but one world and two G-ds has been intimidated by toys like these, but I have one G-d and two worlds and do not fear them!"

After this event the new Rebbe moved Jewish life underground. Many Rabbinical scholars left for Poland and Lithuania, the Rebbe refused to abandon the Russian Jews and with this secret system of Shuls, schools, yeshivas and Mikveh's sustained Jews against communist destructive attack on Judaism
